Declaration of Independence



IN CONGRESS, July 4,1776.


The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,


When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.


We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.— That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.— Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.



He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy of the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.



In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.


Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.


We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Yes, i still exist.  I've just been horribly busy, and alternately not feeling well, so blogging has been about lowest priority.  http://blog.flaim.net has a more recent posting or two.  Someday I'll migrate to there, full time.  Not this month, though.

2008 holiday travel woes...

So my wife and I went back to Millinocket, Maine to visit her mom for Christmas. We booked our flight from Portland to Bangor, via New York (JFK), and the flight to JFK went off without a hitch, despite snow on the ground in Portland. (My brother, leaving the next day, barely got out..) We got to JFK, and due to our longer than average layover (over 6 hours) had to retrieve our luggage, and recheck in. When we did, we learned our flight to Bangor was cancelled, and we were then booked on a flight to Portland ME, so we checked in our luggage, and waited in the terminal. 30 minutes later, we learned that the flight to Portland was cancelled, and our next available flight to Bangor or Portland was on Monday (this was Friday). Not wanting to wait 3 days in an airport, or get a hotel for 3 nights, we decided to rent a car and drive. Her mom was already driving to Portland to meet us, so they decided they'd continue on to Boston, meeting us halfway, and drive home from there. So we went to get our luggage, and we were told 'No, you can't have it. It's in the system now, wait til it gets to Bangor and pick it up there.' So off we went to the rental car place, where we were the last folks in line to get a car w/o a reservation, and off we went, driving up the coast in the snow and ice and darkness, to Boston.

We eventually made it to Millinocket at 8am, and crashed, slept til 4:30pm. We went back to Bangor on Monday to get our luggage, and it wasn't there. It was still in Boston. We had gone all weekend on one change of clothes each, plus a trip to target to get toiletries to replace that which was still in the luggage. So we made a claim for the luggage, and they delivered it Wednesday, Christmas Eve.

Whew. And that's just the trip *to* Maine.

It took my wife 90 minutes on hold bouncing around to various departments to make sure our return trip wasn't cancelled, which they do if you miss part of your flight. It was, but she got it all fixed, so we were set to return to Portland, OR from Bangor, via JFK.

On the way to the airport, we got a call that JFK was closed, and we were being rebooked to Boston, then Minneapolis, then Portland. Oh, and we needed to be there an hour earlier, but since we'd planned in an hour for lunch that was ok. We got to the plane, and boarded, and got to Boston... where we circled for 20 minutes. After which, they announced that the airport was closed, and would be re-opened in 30 minutes, but we didn't have enough fuel, so we had to divert to Scranton, PA, to refuel. 45 min there, 30 min on the ground refueling, 45min back, and 20 minutes deplaning left us with exactly 15 minutes to cross the airport to our next flight. Running, we made it with only a few minutes to spare. We got seated, and then sat. We backed away from the gate, and waited 30 minutes on the ground while the plane was de-iced. After we got partway there, it was announced that a headwind, combined with the de-icing, would put us behind schedule about 50 minutes, which again, left us with 20 minutes to cross from one end of an airport to the other, and we once again just barely made the flight in Minneapolis.
I think at this point the travel gods realized we'd gotten screwed enough and deserved a break, and we found ourselves in first class for the last leg. Yay, free whisky!

Next time, we go in summer. Maybe as late as September, which I hear is when the first frost kills off all the bugs.

So apparently, we were getting $130 worth of services from Comcast, which is far too much, so I dropped the TV down to super basic, which they said would be only the network channels, but it turns out to be a good 25 channels, though half of them are cable access, shopping, or spanish channels. Still, it dropped the bill to $60/mo. Woo. (Oh, and I also took off the boosty thingy for internet speed. Downloads are capped at 10mbit anyhow, so when they top out at 8mbit, big fuckin deal. And i saved $10. more woo.)

I totally lust after these. They are quite possibly the coolest things I have ever seen. They make me want Lasik surgery, just so I could wear them and not have to fuss w/ glasses.

So I've been really lax lately about posting anything.

News: I'm now married, and very happily so. Married life agrees with me.

I have transcended love and ewwwwww: Andrea asked me today how much I love her.. I responded thusly:

Imagine all the cupids ever to exist in the history of all mythology.. then put them in a blender, and puree them, then distill them all down to one drop of pure concentrated love... that's how much I love you.

So I had a thought. What if you could sacrifice a tile to destroy an existing tile already in play, which you then imediately (that turn) had to replace to make a fully legal word, and the sacrifice cost you (20 - pt value of tile sacrificed) points? So for example, you sacrifice an E, you lose 19 points, but sacrificing a J would only lose you 12 points, and the sacrificed tile would be set aside, out of the game, and I think it ought to be limited to one per turn. Of course, this requires playtesting... anyone willing to give it a shot and see how it goes?

Nope, nothing's happened.

Yeah, right. :-)

Nothing notable that comes to mind.. just getting Andrea's stuff moved in in prep for her moving in in August (but really, she's leaving for CA on July 3rd, so we pretty much have until then), getting used to the new place. But I thought I'd just say yo, and mention that i'm still around..

That makes twice in under 5 months i've moved. That's gotta be some kinda record. Still have a few things in Salem I need to get, but the Huge Pile Of Stuff is being shrunk, with Andrea's help.. I haven't thrown away so much stuff in years. If ever.

In case you haven't been around the places I've been announcing lately, I'm engaged. :) We have a date, August 4th, in Las Vegas, with only family in attendance (since that will end up being lots). And yes, we chose a suitable geeky place to have our ceremony, to be followed by a meandering drive up the California/Oregon coast for our honeymoon.

I'm pleased. :)

The other day I dropped into Goodwill to kill time after dropping Andrea off at a baby shower, and they had a little Bodum french press for $3, so I grabbed it. Tonight I whipped up a cup after discussing with a friend the appropriate formula (which is 2/3 oz of coffee (coarse ground), 8 oz water at 190F, steep for 4 min, press and pour)...

Even with the old fine-ground coffee (not the coarse) that wasn't anywhere near fresh, it was far and away the best cup of coffee I've had in my life. It didn't even need to be super sweet, like I usually make it, because there was actual coffee flavor in it. I was blown away. Of course, due to the super fine grind, I had a ton of sludge in the cup, so I'm gonna go get some coffee beans and grind them coarse sometime soon. If this improves anymore, I shall be hooked, for sure.

When I was growing up, Salem consistently received awards for the quality of their drinking water, and so I became spoiled. Didn't matter where I went, I couldn't ever drink the water, because it was either substandard to my picky tastes, or completely nasty. So, after 25 days of living in Portland, I finally got up the nerve to drink water from the tap. And I was not surprised. Eww.

However, nothing a little True Lime and Splenda can't fix. 1 and 2, respectively, to a glass, and voila, instant limeade. Weak, sure, but just enough to take the edge off the water which is prolly fine for most people, but my spoiled palate just can't handle.

Someday I'll have one of these, and it will no longer be an issue.

Frozen sliced carrots, 1c of brown rice w/ a touch of Mrs. Dash, soy sauce, and Cholula, and one chicken breast cooked on the Foreman grill (devirginizing it, actually). End result: One stuffed Flaim, at 9 points. w00t!

For those that don't know, Points (tm) are from the flex plan, one of the WW options. Through some fancy calculus when you start the program, it's determined how many points you get per day (I get 44), which is your goal, plus 35 wildcard points for the week, to use whenever you like, and which reset when you weigh in once a week. I personally don't plan on using the 35 very much, cuz if you skip em, you lose weight faster. Or so they say. This being week 2, I have no real evidence yet. :-) But I'm feeling better about every day, so who cares what weight I lose...

I do believe I just had to relearn how to make a bed. So much real estate... almost a shame I'm going to be all alone my first night. ;-)

I'm sitting here waiting ever-so-impatiently for my new bed to be delivered. What's been going on... I started Weight Watchers on Wednesday. I went because my girlfriend asked me to go, but after getting to and through the meeting, I really like the program, and despite my initial trepidations I think I'll stick with it.
I'm still in the process of moving to my new place. I just got a dining room table and chairs, and the aforementioned bed, but really have nothing else. Friends have promised me a sofa bed, but it comes down to when and how we'll get it over here.

*knock knock* Woo, the bed is here!
